While the regions affected saw a total of 21,674 deaths from all causes, statistical modeling indicates that 15,910 deaths would have occurred without the extreme temperatures. The heat wave was characterized by its early onset and intensity, with the hottest days occurring on June 24 and June 25. The Paris region was the hardest hit, recording 1,999 unexpected deaths, which was 80% more than anticipated. Nearly half of the total deaths occurred in hospitals, while the remainder were split between home deaths and care homes for the elderly. Funeral service directors in Paris reported difficulties storing bodies as mortuaries reached capacity. Experts noted that while the current figures are high, many heat-related deaths may not be formally recorded as such, as extreme heat often triggers underlying conditions like heart attacks.
