Governor Gavin Newsom expressed concern that the $111 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery could negatively impact state employment if blocked by the antitrust lawsuit filed by 12 states. Newsom has encouraged Attorney General Rob Bonta to seek a resolution out of court to avoid a potential loss of jobs. California Attorney General Rob Bonta led the lawsuit, which alleges that combining two of Hollywood's top five studios will lead to higher prices and lower content quality. The merger is currently on hold until a court ruling or June 2027, whichever comes first. While some industry figures like Ari Emanuel support the merger, the administration of the lawsuit seeks to balance competition with the finality of the deal. Paramount has agreed to pause the acquisition until U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín issues a final decision on whether the deal violates antitrust laws.
