GE Aerospace and Beta Technologies achieve world first with hybrid-electric flight test above 30,000 feet

GE Aerospace and Beta Technologies have successfully completed the world’s first hybrid-electric flight test at an altitude above 30,000 feet, marking a significant milestone for commercial aviation. The test, conducted on May 20, utilized a modified Saab 340B aircraft equipped with a megawatt-class hybrid-electric propulsion system. This achievement demonstrates that hybrid-electric technology can operate effectively at standard commercial airline altitudes, providing a foundation for future fuel-efficient aircraft. The project was developed through the NASA Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration project in collaboration with Boeing. The aircraft, which served as a flying laboratory, sustained hybrid operation for over two hours during the test. GE Aerospace leaders noted that the success of this flight provides critical data for scaling hybrid technology across various engine architectures. The results will also inform the development of the Open Fan architecture, a joint venture with Safran. These innovations aim to provide significant gains in fuel efficiency and durability for the next generation of commercial flight.
