Abdul Ballout's Berlin Pride attack prompts increased security for European celebrations
Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German citizen with Lebanese roots, caused a significant disruption at the Berlin Pride festival on July 25. After plowing a vehicle into a crowd and stabbing attendees with a machete, Ballout was shot and killed by police the following day. The incident, described as a suspected Islamist terrorist attack, left one person dead and 29 others injured. Following the attack, European cities are implementing heightened security measures for their respective Pride events. Hamburg's police chief announced that roughly twice as many officers will protect the event, which expects 250,000 attendees. In Amsterdam, Mayor Femke Halsema stated that authorities will take extra measures where necessary to ensure a smooth experience for visitors.
