Scott Bessent announced a new $1 gold-colored coin featuring President Donald Trump to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary of independence.

The administration announced that the U.S. Mint will begin striking a new $1 gold-colored coin featuring President Donald Trump to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed the design, noting that while the coin features a gold-like finish, it is made of non-precious metals. The coins are scheduled for release this fall. The move has drawn criticism from Representative Thomas Massie, who mocked the production of a commemorative coin while the government simultaneously seeks to eliminate the penny. Additionally, members of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee expressed concern over the legality of the coin, noting that the committee never formally reviewed the design as required by law. Despite these critiques, the administration maintains the coin is legal under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. The new currency will join other upcoming releases, including paper currency that will feature the signature of President Donald Trump for the first time in American history.
