Speaker Mike Johnson Proposes $95 Billion Spending Bill for Defense and Election Aid
Speaker Mike Johnson outlined a proposed $95 billion emergency funding package intended to cover defense expenditures, including costs related to the Iran conflict, and funding for state election grants. The proposal includes up to $73 billion for the Pentagon and national security, along with $10 billion to promote policies supporting Donald Trump. Sources indicate that funding this massive request will largely increase the national deficit rather than using cuts to government programs, a point of contention for many conservatives. The bill also allocates $12 billion for agricultural aid. House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington previously suggested using tax credits and healthcare programs to fund such legislation. However, Johnson’s plan bypasses those measures. Senator John Thune warned that attempting to pass the bill through spending cuts could expose lawmakers to challenging amendments. Meanwhile, Republican Representative Warren Davidson questioned the fiscal sustainability of such commitments. The Pentagon has urged lawmakers to pass the funding before the August recess, despite the fiscal concerns raised by members of the House GOP.
