Governor Bob Ferguson Declares Statewide Emergency as Record-Setting Drought and High Winds Fuel Extreme Wildfire Risk
Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency on Saturday to address record-setting drought conditions, high winds, and extreme wildfire risks across Washington. The proclamation includes a statewide ban on most outdoor and agricultural burning through September 30, effectively prohibiting activities such as yard debris burning, land clearing, and bonfires not contained in fire rings. This emergency comes as the National Weather Service issues a "Particularly Dangerous Situation" Red Flag Alert for eastern Washington, where strong westerly winds and low humidity are expected to create rapid fire spread. Washington is currently experiencing its fourth consecutive statewide drought, with over 1,000 fires having burned 425,000 acres this year. To support firefighting efforts, the administration activated 110 National Guard members and mobilized 13 task forces. Residents in central and eastern Washington are urged to be prepared for sudden evacuations and to have "go bags" ready as fire danger remains high.
