Governor Abigail Spanberger will formally intervene in the proposed $67 billion merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy, becoming the first Virginia governor to take such a legal action before the State Corporation Commission. The administration announced that the merger would create the world's largest regulated electric utility, serving approximately 10 million customer accounts across Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. Spanberger expressed skepticism regarding whether selling the state's primary utility to an out-of-state company would benefit the commonwealth. Her involvement will focus on three priorities: long-term affordability for residents, ensuring Virginia jobs remain in the state, and maintaining local clean energy goals. While NextEra Energy has proposed a $10 monthly bill credit for two years, Spanberger argued that the benefits of the deal should last longer for the residents who pay the bills. Dominion Energy leadership welcomed the intervention, noting that the transaction includes shareholder-funded bill credits and employment protections for Virginia workers.
