Nolan Xavier Wells family and legal team seek answers as investigation into the teen's mysterious death continues.
Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was found dead on July 6 after disappearing during a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island. While his group of friends returned to the mainland, Wells remained on the island, eventually being discovered by a park ranger. The investigation has gained national attention, particularly because Wells was one of the few Black people in a predominantly white group. His family, represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, has commissioned an independent autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. While the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office does not currently suspect foul play, the family remains skeptical because Wells’ phone and keys were found with his friends rather than on his person. The administration of the case involves a collaborative effort between local and federal agencies. The FBI Jackson office has assisted the sheriff's office with federal tools, while the district attorney will eventually present all evidence to a grand jury. A funeral service will be held on Monday at Center Pointe Church.
