Greek Firefighters Battle Intense Wildfires Across Central Greece and the Island of Crete
Greek firefighters are currently battling several major wildfires across the country, with hundreds of people being evacuated by sea from the coastal town of Agios Vasileios in Viotia. The fire, which broke out near Agios Vasileios in Viotia on Friday morning, spread rapidly due to strong winds, leaving approximately 500 people stranded. Emergency workers are attempting to safety remove the remaining residents while over 200 people have already been evacuated. Another significant wildfire on the island of Crete has torched thousands of hectares of land, prompting the temporary evacuation of 8,000 people. These blazes are occurring amidst a period of successive heatwaves that have created favorable conditions for fire spread. While most wildfires are sparked by human activity, climate change is making such conditions more common. In Spain and Portugal, similar large-scale fires are also being managed, with Spain recording a wildfire in the Ávila region that is now considered the largest in the nation's history.
