Khalil al-Hayya has been elected as the new leader of the Hamas terror group.
Khalil al-Hayya was elected as the new head of Hamas, ending nearly two years of the movement operating without a formal leader. Al-Hayya defeated former chief Khaled Meshaal by a single vote in a secretive election process held following the assassination of former leader Yahya Sinwar. As a pragmatist and former deputy head, Khalil al-Hayya is expected to maintain the group's close ties with Iran while continuing to pursue diplomatic paths. He served as a principal negotiator during ceasefire talks and established a rapport with US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. While Hamas's military strength has been depleted by Israeli strikes, the group maintains administrative control over Gaza. The administration announced that Hamas recently ceded its governmental control to a technocratic committee to demonstrate a willingness to transition power. Experts suggest that Khalil al-Hayya’s election provides the US with a clear leader to engage with as negotiations continue over the future of the Gaza Strip.
