Wesley Bell defeats Cori Bush in Missouri Democratic primary for 1st Congressional District
Incumbent U.S. Rep. Wesley Bell secured a victory over former Congresswoman Cori Bush in the Democratic primary for Missouri's 1st Congressional District. Bell won 59% of the vote, ending the most expensive candidate primary in the state this year. The race was defined by contrasting political styles: Bell, a moderate pragmatist, emphasized his ability to secure funding from the administration and his support for Israel, while Bush, a progressive activist, championed Palestinian liberation and used the bully pulpit to advocate for local issues like eviction protections. Bell's campaign was heavily supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which spent over $8 million to back him. In contrast, Bush's campaign relied on her background as a Black Lives Matter organizer and her personal advocacy. While Bell criticized Bush for missing numerous House votes and being less accessible to voters, Bush argued that Bell lacked a legislative record. The winner will face Republican Paul Berry III and Libertarian Tom Schmitz in the November general election.
