Tom Curtis says Burger King is preparing for the long-term impact of GLP-1 weight loss medications on fast food consumption.
Tom Curtis, president of Burger King’s U.S. and Canada operations, stated that the fast-food chain is proactively adapting to the rise of GLP-1 medications. As more Americans use these drugs to manage weight, the chain is testing protein-forward bowls and Whopper Bites to accommodate consumers who are seeking fewer calories but high-quality protein. While some analysts fear the medications could erase up to $55 billion in annual food industry revenue by 2030, Curtis maintains that fast food remains essential due to its convenience and value. He emphasized that the company aims to maintain menu simplicity while offering variety in smaller packages. This measured approach is part of a broader "Reclaim the Flame" strategy, which includes a $2 billion investment in branding and remodeling. Early results are positive, with Burger King reporting a 5.8% increase in comparable store sales in the first quarter of the year, suggesting that the brand is successfully navigating changing consumer habits.
