Meta Platforms is expanding its Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to a 5-gigawatt compute capacity at a total cost of more than $50 billion. This investment represents a significant increase from a prior price tag of roughly $27 billion and an original design capacity of 2 gigawatts. The four-million-square-foot campus will utilize a closed-loop thermal architecture to manage heat output, minimizing water consumption and insulating the facility from municipal utility rate shocks. By selecting a rural southern market over traditional high-cost tech hubs, the company is leveraging abundant land and favorable tax structures. The project has already awarded more than $1.6 billion in initial procurement contracts to Louisiana-based businesses, supporting local manufacturing and logistics. Once fully operational, the campus will support approximately 1,000 permanent technical roles. The project also incorporates a direct watershed restoration strategy to convert former cattle pastures into native forested uplands and wetland ecosystems, providing an ecological offset for the localized heat rejection from the dry-cooling arrays.
