Deb Boyden reports that American workers believe they need $1.2 million to retire comfortably despite many expecting to save much less.
Deb Boyden, head of U.S. defined contribution at Schroders, reports a significant gap between American retirement expectations and reality. A recent survey found that while workers believe they need $1.2 million to retire in comfort, only 30% expect to reach the $1 million milestone. In fact, 51% of workplace retirement plan participants anticipate having less than $500,000 saved. The report highlights that many Americans are struggling to balance retirement savings with immediate financial pressures. Over half of those surveyed are unable to save 10% of their salary due to competing priorities, and 33% have more credit card debt than retirement savings. Additionally, 69% of participants feel that rising costs for housing, healthcare, and utilities have put retirement out of reach for their generation. Boyden noted that many investors are currently keeping a large portion of their savings in cash to prioritize safety, though experts warn this can lead to a significant opportunity cost compared to a diversified mix of stocks and bonds.
