Mayor Zohran Mamdani Extends Deadline for New York City Pied-à-Terre Tax Exemptions
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a one-month extension for New York City homeowners to apply for exemptions from the new pied-à-terre tax. The new deadline is now September 18, providing residents with more time to submit evidence that their property is a primary residence rather than a secondary home. This extension follows a period of confusion regarding the rollout of the tax, which targets secondary residences valued at $5 million or more. While the city sent letters to approximately 17,000 homeowners stating they may be subject to the tax, many residents complained that their primary homes were included in the initial list. Mayor Zohran Mamdani clarified that the property tax roll included nearly 1 million addresses, and the initial letters were intended to provide a process for homeowners to appeal their assessments. The tax is expected to raise $500 million annually for the city. To manage the implementation, the administration added 24 new positions across the Department of Finance and the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings.
