Hurricane Fausto is expected to weaken into a tropical storm as it approaches the Hawaiian Islands next week.

Hurricane Fausto has reached peak intensity as a Category 2 storm with winds of approximately 100 mph. The National Hurricane Center reports that the system is currently moving through the Pacific Ocean toward Hawaii. While the storm is currently in the forecast cone, cooler waters and dry air are expected to cause it to weaken into a tropical storm by Monday. The administration's weather forecasters indicate that the strongest winds will likely remain to the north of the islands, though heavy rain and high surf are expected on the east and northeast-facing beaches. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Genevieve is also developing in the eastern Pacific and is forecast to become a major hurricane by the end of the week. Local officials are urging residents to prepare for the upcoming weather. Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen emphasized the importance of community readiness, while Kīele Amundson of the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency advised families to ensure they are "2 Weeks Ready" with essential supplies.
