Jay Gambetta and IBM researchers demonstrate quantum advantage through trusted computations exceeding classical limits
Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, and a team of researchers from the University of Chicago have demonstrated a significant milestone in quantum computing. The collaboration achieved a quantum advantage, where a quantum computer performs a computation that exceeds the capabilities of alone classical computers while providing a rigorous validation of the results. By using a novel construction of encoded quantum circuits, the team successfully executed 70 logical qubits while shielding them from errors. This method, known as doped Clifford sampling, allows for the detection of errors during the computation, shifting verification from statistical proxies to direct certification of the fidelity of the logical computation. The IBM quantum computer completed the task in approximately 15 minutes, while leading classical simulation approaches faced prohibitive runtimes. This achievement establishes a new foundation for trusting quantum computers as they scale. The administration announced that these results, along with other contributions from Qedma and Algorithmiq, are now part of the Quantum Advantage Tracker to be benchmarked against leading classical methods.
