IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that quantum computing is approaching a point of significant commercial viability, projecting it to generate a trillion dollars of value by the end of the 2030s. Krishna noted that the technology will have a measurable impact on the company's top and bottom lines by 2028 or 2029. Recent research from IBM, in collaboration with the University of Chicago and Qedma Quantum Computing, demonstrated 'quantum advantage.' This milestone occurs when a quantum computer outperforms leading classical computers on trusted computations. The teams showed that quantum systems could solve complex problems, such as the oscillatory dynamics of a two-dimensional Floquet Ising model, more efficiently than the world's most powerful supercomputers. Despite some skepticism regarding hardware complexity and scalability, Krishna remains optimistic. He emphasized that the company is already seeing progress toward real-world applications, including improved batteries and smarter medicines. To support this growth, the administration announced a $1 billion commitment through the CHIPS incentive to develop a standalone quantum chip foundry, which IBM will match with its own $1 billion investment.
