Lorenzo Thompson, a Jamaican citizen and Southwest Airlines flight attendant, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 14 at Nashville International Airport. The administration announced that Thompson entered the United States lawfully in April 2021 with a six-month visa but failed to depart, remaining in the country illegally for five years. While federal officials noted that Thompson was cooperative and taken into custody without incident, his supporters and union representatives emphasized his efforts to follow the rules. His attorney, Tremaine Hemans, stated that Thompson has no criminal record and holds an employment authorization document. A GoFundMe campaign organized by his friend, Kristin Foster, highlights that Thompson is seeking asylum and has worked tirelessly to build a stable life. The union representing Southwest flight attendants, TWU Local 556, confirmed the arrest and is providing legal support. ICE continues to encourage illegal immigrants to self-deport by offering $2,600 and a free flight to those who choose to leave voluntarily.
