David Brouillette is identified as the ICE officer who fatally shot an illegal immigrant in Maine amid calls for better vetting.
David Brouillette is the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who fatally shot 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine. While federal officials have not officially confirmed the shooter's identity, Brouillette’s family members identified him as the officer who used deadly force. The shooting occurred during an operation where agents were searching for a different individual. The incident has sparked criticism regarding the administration's aggressive hiring of 12,000 new agents. Democratic lawmakers, including Bennie Thompson and Chuck Schumer, have called for a review of ICE's vetting processes. They noted that Brouillette had a history of alleged domestic violence and cognitive issues following a head injury. The administration announced that the officer is currently on administrative leave while the investigation continues. Although Durán Guerrero held a work permit, the Department of Homeland Security noted he was still considered an illegal immigrant because his case was pending. The shooting is the fourth time this year that federal immigration authorities have killed an immigrant, fueling demands for a transparent investigation into the agency's rapid expansion.
