While federal officials have not officially confirmed the shooter's identity, Brouillette’s ex-wife, Ashley Brouillette, stated that he admitted to opening fire on the illegal immigrant. The shooting has raised questions regarding the vetting process for new ICE hires. Records show that David Brouillette suffered a serious head injury from a falling steel I-beam in 2021, which resulted in lingering cognitive deficits and memory issues. Furthermore, his personal history includes allegations of domestic violence and mental health struggles, including bipolar disorder and borderline schizophrenia. His first ex-wife, Ashley Brouillette, noted that he was prone to aggression and displayed a history of racist beliefs. Despite these personal challenges, the administration announced that the officer possessed nearly a decade of federal law enforcement experience.
