Nebraska Becomes First State to Implement Medicaid Work Requirements Under the Administration's New Budget Law
Nebraska is set to become the first state to remove individuals from Medicaid coverage for failing to meet new work requirements established by the administration. Starting August 1, approximately 200 Nebraskans will lose their coverage as the state begins early implementation of the federal rules. Under the new law, recipients aged 19 to 64 must work, volunteer, or participate in job training for at least 80 hours per month to maintain benefits, unless they qualify for specific exemptions such as pregnancy, disability, or caregiving. Medicaid Director Drew Gonshorowski stated that the state is well-positioned to lead because of its efficient eligibility system. While supporters argue the policy will help move people toward economic stability and save the federal government $325 billion over 10 years, critics express concern over potential paperwork hurdles. The administration announced guidance on these requirements, though some states like Wisconsin are still awaiting specific definitions for
