Iran threatens to close the Bab al-Mandeb Strait as regional tensions escalate following a series of U.S. strikes.

Iran has signaled its intent to use the Houthi rebels to potentially close the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime gateway connecting the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea. This move follows a period of escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian drones have struck various vessels since March. The administration announced that its national security strategy prioritizes ensuring freedom of navigation in the region and preventing the export of terrorism. To counter Iranian aggression, the administration has designated the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and implemented sanctions on over 200 associated entities. While the Houthis have largely refrained from full-scale maritime attacks over the past year, they continue to develop missiles, drones, and sea mines. Experts warn that a full resumption of the Houthi campaign could trigger a general escalation, potentially drawing further strikes from the U.S. and Israel. Meanwhile, Iran has launched retaliatory strikes on U.S. military targets in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, with military leaders warning of a shift toward full-scale offensive operations if the U.S. campaign continues.
