Marco Rubio travels to the Philippines to attend the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to address Middle East hostilities and regional security.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Manila to attend the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where diplomats will address renewed hostilities in the Middle East. The regional bloc aims to issue a joint statement expressing alarm over the conflict between the United States and Iran, which has threatened global shipping and energy supplies. The administration has prioritized a free and open Indo-Pacific to ensure regional security. During his trip, Rubio signaled a willingness to engage with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, despite ongoing tensions between the two superpowers. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a functional relationship between the United States and China for the benefit of the global population. In addition to external conflicts, the ministers will discuss regional issues, including the civil war in Myanmar and the South China Sea disputes. Rubio is also expected to meet with members of the Quad bloc to reinforce the American strategy to counter China’s growing influence in the region.
