The strikes occurred despite a ceasefire agreement reached in October between Israel and Hamas. This agreement was part of a broader plan put forward by President Trump to end the war and begin rebuilding. While the heaviest fighting has subsided, Israel continues to conduct near-daily attacks to target Hamas militants who pose a threat. Since the ceasefire began, at least 1,127 Palestinians have been killed, including 260 children. The Israeli military reported that it now controls nearly 70 percent of the territory, exceeding the area expected to be held under the initial agreement.
