City of Madison crews clear the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets nearly two weeks after Corey Ruiz was shot and killed.
City crews and the Wisconsin State Patrol arrived at the intersection of Williamson and Street and Baldwin Street early Tuesday morning to clear the encampment established after the shooting of Corey Ruiz. The operation began around 4:45 a.m., with city trucks and police in riot gear surrounding the area to manage the traffic and the protesters. At approximately 5:00 a.m., crews gave the residents of the encampment a verbal warning to vacate. Shortly after, rioters threw memorial candles into the air, starting three fires that required response from fire trucks and the Special Events team. At least 10 people were arrested during the process. City officials stated that the unhoused residents will be transported to hotels by city bus, while their belongings are being moved to Demetral Park for retrieval. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway had previously called for the clearing of the site. The intersection is scheduled to reopen at 9:30 a.m., ending all previous detours.
