Jackie the bald eagle remains in critical condition as specialists work to determine the cause of her severe anemia
Jackie, the internet-famous bald eagle from Big Bear Lake, remains in critical condition while undergoing intensive treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center. The 14-year-old bird was rescued after an altercation with two subadult eagles, though experts believe she was already ill before the fight. The administration announced that initial tests have ruled out lead poisoning, cancer, and the presence of foreign objects like fishing hooks. While Jackie is receiving treatment for rodenticide poisoning, specialists are still investigating the primary cause of her severe anemia and kidney inflammation. The eagle recently received a life-saving blood transfusion from Spirit, a resident bald eagle at the CALM Zoo in Bakersfield. This collaboration between wildlife agencies has shown encouraging results, as Jackie is currently eating well, perching, and showing slight improvements in energy. Despite these positive signs, the medical team cautioned that it is still too early to predict the final outcome of her recovery. Meanwhile, her mate Shadow continues to care for their two young chicks, Sandy and Luna, at their nest in the San Bernardino National Forest.
