Sanae Takaichi leads rescue efforts following a deadly 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Japan's Kumamoto prefecture
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is overseeing the mobilization of thousands of emergency responders to search for survivors following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan's southern Kumamoto prefecture. The quake, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in 34 deaths, including five people killed in a partially collapsed shopping mall and several others lost when a factory chimney collapsed. Japan is well-prepared for such tectonic events, having invested heavily in quake-proof infrastructure and detection technology. However, high temperatures are currently complicating rescue operations, with temperatures expected to exceed 35 degrees Celsius. Sanae Takaichi stated that the government is devoting full efforts to rescue activities and working to restore electricity in affected areas. While the region recently recovered from a larger 2016 quake, the new tremor has left residents and authorities on high alert for aftershocks. Experts note that Japan remains a global leader in earthquake resilience, though the government continues to warn of a potential future megathrust earthquake.
