Professor Jason Arday Resigns from University of Cambridge Following Investigation into Academic Qualifications
Professor Jason Arday has resigned from the University of Cambridge with immediate effect following the university's decision to launch an investigation into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments. Arday, who became the university's youngest black professor in 2023, admitted to making errors in his early work but maintained that he was not a liar. The resignation follows a series of media reports and public scrutiny regarding allegations of plagiarism in his PhD thesis and questions concerning his athletic and fundraising achievements. While the university initially defended Arday, citing a previous investigation by Liverpool John Moores University that did not uphold the plagiarism charges, it opened a new inquiry after new evidence suggested some of his research was fabricated. Arday attributed some of his early academic mistakes to his autism and a lack of supervision during his doctorate. He stated that the personal cost of the unrelenting public scrutiny has become too great, leading to his decision to step away to allow for time to heal.
