Johnson & Johnson announced a landmark settlement of approximately $5.5 billion to resolve nearly all outstanding claims involving its talc-based products and ovarian cancer. The agreement covers about 76,000 claims, including those consolidated in federal court in New Jersey and various state court cases. While the company has long denied that its talc products caused cancer, the settlement provides a way to efficiently end a decade-long legal battle. Erik Haas, the worldwide vice-president of litigation at Johnson & Johnson, stated that while the company was confident it would have eventually won the litigation, the settlement allows the firm to focus on its core mission of developing medicines and devices. The deal requires approval from 95% of the claimants to become final. Attorney Chris Seeger, who represents approximately 2,500 clients, noted that the total payout could exceed $7 billion depending on the participation rate. This agreement settles existing claims only and does not address future lawsuits, allowing for a faster payout schedule than previous bankruptcy attempts.
