Araceli Martínez-Olguín Sets March 2027 Trial Date for Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín has scheduled the trial for the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger to begin on March 2, 2027. The decision follows a legal battle between Paramount, led by owner David Ellison, and a coalition of 11 state attorneys general and the Writers Guild of America who sought to block the transaction. While Paramount pushed for an earlier November trial, the judge's decision favors the timeline requested by the state attorneys general. Paramount is expected to will pay Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders over $1 billion in ticking fees if the merger is not finalized by March 19, 2027. If the deal fails to close, Paramount will owe a $7 billion termination fee. David Ellison has publicly addressed concerns regarding the independence of CNN under his ownership, asserting that he intends to preserve its journalistic integrity. To mitigate political concerns, business partner Ari Emanuel has suggested establishing an independent editorial board to safeguard the news network's neutrality.
