Judit Polgar declines the invitation to become the next president of Hungary.
Judit Polgar, the world's most accomplished female chess player, has declined an invitation to serve as the next president of Hungary. The offer came from Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who sought a leader capable of providing unity and peace for the nation. Polgar expressed her gratitude for the nomination but stated she did not feel she possessed the sufficient strength to take on the historic responsibility of uniting a divided country. Despite her legendary status in the sport of chess, Polgar noted she would still support the new president in achieving national goals. The nomination followed a constitutional amendment by the Tisza party to end the term of the previous president, Tamas Sulyok. Magyar chose Polgar because her name has been synonymous with talent and perseverance for decades. While the presidency is largely ceremonial, the current role will serve as a temporary position until a new constitution is adopted. Polgar remains a prominent figure in Hungarian culture, having previously broken records as the youngest grandmaster in history.
