Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear Demands Proof of Fitness from Senator Mitch McConnell
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has issued an ultimatum to Senator Mitch McConnell, demanding that the 84-year-old Republican senator prove his capacity to serve in the U.S. Senate or resign. The demand follows a 43-day period of public absence since McConnell's hospitalization on June 14 due to a fall at his home. Beshear wrote to McConnell, urging him to provide a direct verbal address to the people of Kentucky to confirm his fitness. Failing that, the governor sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, requesting an investigation into McConnell's condition. While McConnell's office reported that he has been discharged from the hospital but is not yet medically cleared to return to the office, the attending physician's statement focused on mobility rather than cognitive health. Senator Mitch McConnell has already announced his intention to retire at the end of his current term in 2026. Representative Andy Barr is currently favored to succeed him in Kentucky's red state.
