Moonshot AI releases Kimi K3 open-weight model weights while sparking debate over AI distillation and intellectual property rights
Chinese startup Moonshot AI has released the full weights for its Kimi K3 model, the world's first open 3T-class model. The release includes a 2.8 trillion-parameter architecture and a one million-token context window, allowing developers to self-host the system. However, the new license imposes specific commercial obligations for companies with over $20 million in annual revenue operating a "Model as a Service" business, requiring a separate agreement with Moonshot AI. The release has also highlighted the practice of AI distillation, where outputs from advanced models are used to train smaller, more capable models.
