A landslide in Chongqing's Pengshui County killed at least eight people and left 34 missing after burying over 10 residential buildings.
A landslide on the outskirts of the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing killed at least eight people and left 34 missing on Friday. The disaster occurred at approximately 9:08 a.m. in Pengshui County, where massive amounts of rocks and soil washed downslope, burying more than 10 residential buildings and forcing over 1,100 residents to evacuate. Ren Xujiang, the Mayor of Pengshui County, reported that ten people were rescued from the debris, including two who sustained serious injuries. To manage the site, authorities cut off water, electricity, and gas supplies within a 0.6-mile radius. More than 800 rescuers are currently working on the site, utilizing drones and over 50 sets of detection equipment to navigate the unstable terrain. The administration has allocated 50 million yuan in natural disaster relief funds to support the operation. Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed officials to conduct a scientific search and rescue operation while determining the primary cause of the collapse.
