She will face Republican nominee Ty Masterson, who emerged from a crowded field of candidates to represent the GOP in the deep red state. Democrats hope Holscher can maintain the party's hold on the governorship after Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly reaches her term limit in January. Republicans view the open-seat race as a primary opportunity to reclaim the leadership of the state government. The primary occurred alongside a constitutional amendment proposal backed by Republican lawmakers to replace the current system of appointing Kansas Supreme Court justices with a direct election system. The winner of the November election will succeed Kelly, who served two terms. Kansas voters showed a strong Republican lean in the2024 election, where they voted 57% for President Trump.
