Tucson Police Officer Stops Gunman Who Wounded Nine People in Downtown Shooting

A Tucson police officer shot a male suspect who opened fire in a crowded downtown area early Sunday morning, leaving nine people wounded. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. near East Congress Street and North 6th Avenue, where officers on foot patrol heard gunshots and responded to the scene. According to Frank Magos of the Tucson Police Department, officers encountered the suspect running from the area and gave him multiple commands before a uniformed officer fired his department-issued firearm. The suspect was taken to a local hospital in life-threatening condition. The nine victims, all adults, suffered gunshot wounds primarily to their extremities and were transported to a hospital in critical condition. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the criminal investigation, while the Tucson Police Department is conducting a parallel internal probe to determine if any policy violations occurred. Mayor Regina Romero called the shooting a "senseless act of gun violence" and urged lawmakers to address Arizona’s weak gun safety laws.
