Mazen Farah documents the destruction of his family's stone house in southern Lebanon via satellite imagery
Mazen Farah and his family are using commercial satellite images to monitor the destruction of their ancestral home in the village of Yaroun, southern Lebanon. Since the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began in March, the village has seen significant infrastructure damage, with residents reporting that 180 of the 200 houses have been destroyed by Israeli forces. Farah notes that while Israel claims to be targeting Hezbollah infrastructure, the residents of Yaroun argue that their homes were not actively used by the militant group. Hanna Farah, the father of Mazen Farah, who lives in New York, expressed frustration that the properties were destroyed by American-supported military actions. He noted that many of the homes were built by residents who lived abroad for decades, including himself and his brother Nehmi Hanna. As the village remains largely inaccessible to residents, satellite imagery provides a vital tool for documentation. While some residents fear the risk of rebuilding, others remain hopeful that they will eventually return to the land.
