Utah has retained its position as the nation's top-ranked state for the fourth consecutive year in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best States rankings. While Texas claimed the nation's highest-ranked economy, Utah demonstrated consistency across multiple categories, including fiscal stability and education. Eric Gertler, the U.S. News Executive Chairman and CEO, noted that the rankings reflect a broader realignment of American economic growth. He observed that human and financial capital are migrating away from high-cost Northeastern states toward more affordable regions in the Midwest and South. The report highlights a significant shift in economic momentum, with states like South Dakota and North Dakota rapidly ascending the rankings. While no single state dominated every category, Utah's performance in five of the eight major categories helped it secure the overall top spot. In contrast, Florida was the only large state to break into the top 10, while California and New York fell out of the top 10 overall.
