The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for all five boroughs, Nassau County, and parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania through 9 p.m. Simultaneously, an urgent Flash Flood Warning is in effect for Manhattan, Brooklyn, and large portions of Queens until 7:15 p.m. Torrential rain rates exceeding 2 inches per hour are expected to inundate urban infrastructure, creating hazardous conditions for travel. Zohran Mamdani advised residents to stay indoors during heavy rain and move to higher ground if living in basement apartments. The severe weather has already impacted regional travel, with more than 1,900 flights canceled across the Northeast. The New York City Emergency Management Department recommends that residents charge cellphones, gather supplies, and prepare for potential power outages. These conditions follow a particularly wet July, with the city experiencing several major rainstorms and flood watches over the past two weeks.
