Kroger ranked as the most affordable major grocery chain for store-brand essentials in a new price comparison study.
Kroger secured the top spot for affordability in a recent study comparing store-brand grocery baskets across four major U.S. chains. The Ohio-based grocer offered the cheapest total basket cost at $30, beating out Walmart, Aldi, and Albertsons. The study by Restaurant Furniture Plus analyzed 15 essential items, including milk, bread, eggs, and chicken breast. Kroger provided the lowest prices on 10 of the 15 items, including pantry staples like spaghetti and sugar. Walmart followed in second place with a basket total of $30.95, while Aldi cost $33.15 and Albertsons cost $35.58. These findings highlight a period of significant inflation for consumers. Food prices have risen 32% over the last five years, causing more than 25% of working-age Americans to rely on credit cards to cover their weekly grocery bills. While Aldi was noted for having particularly strong value in store-brand dairy products, Kroger remains the most cost-effective option for shoppers seeking to stretch their budgets.
