Zohran Mamdani is leading a new initiative to establish city-owned grocery stores across all five boroughs of New York City. The administration announced that these stores will offer a 30% discount on a core basket of essential goods, such as meat, seafood, produce, bread, and dairy, while selling other products at market rates. This pricing strategy is designed to save shoppers approximately $90 a month, or $1,000 a year. To ensure the city-owned stores do not undercut local businesses, the stores will not sell hot food and will focus on staples. The New York City Economic Development Corporation will issue a request for proposals to select a private operator by spring 2027. Tax dollars will cover construction on city-owned land, and the private operators will not pay rent or property tax. While some officials and industry leaders express concern regarding competition with nearby grocers, the administration announced that the stores are intended to be a complement to the existing marketplace.
