Mayor Zohran Mamdani Extends Deadline for New York City Pied-à-Terre Tax Exemptions
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has extended the deadline for homeowners to prove their primary residency and avoid the new New York City pied-à-terre tax by one month, moving the date to September 18. The extension was triggered by mass confusion following the publication of a public real estate roll that listed nearly 1 million properties, leading many residents to believe they would be taxed on secondary residences valued over $5 million. Mayor Zohran Mamdani clarified that only a fraction of those properties are actually subject to the tax, noting that only about 17,000 residents received specific notification letters. Real estate experts, such as Aria Development Group founding partner David Arditi, have warned that targeting high earners could lead to capital flight, particularly toward South Florida. While the administration aims to raise $500 million for the city, critics caution that if high-earning taxpayers leave, the remaining residents may face a larger budget burden. The city is now providing more resources to help homeowners appeal their assessments.
