Julie Menin and Zohran Mamdani Lead New York City Efforts to Regulate Illegal E-Bikes
New York City leaders are moving to regulate the growing number of illegal e-bikes on city streets following the death of 17-year-old Gabriel Nacato. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the city will issue cease-and-desist orders to 42 online retailers, including major companies like Amazon and Best Buy, for selling devices that exceed the city's speed limits. The administration announced that these retailers must comply by August 18 or face a $2,000 fine per illegal sale. Simultaneously, City Council Speaker Julie Menin is overseeing a comprehensive legislative review of 17 bills related to e-micromobility. These proposals include measures to ban high-speed e-bikes, improve street design, and protect delivery workers. While the two leaders are jockeying for influence, the push for regulation stems from a significant increase in collisions. Between 2017 and 2025, 45 people were allegedly killed by illegal e-bikes capable of traveling faster than 25 mph. The goal is to ensure that high-speed vehicles, which often lack proper regulation, do not compromise safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.
