Daniel Aguirre faces attempted murder charges after shooting a Chicago police officer and his mother-in-law during a domestic standoff.

Daniel Aguirre was charged with six felonies, including attempted murder, after a domestic dispute in Albany Park resulted in a shooting and a hostage situation on Monday. The 42-year-old man allegedly held his wife and 14-year-old daughter hostage inside their home on the 4600 block of North Springfield Avenue, where he pistol-whipped the women and punched his daughter. During the standoff, Aguirre shot his 67-year-old mother-in-law through a rear door, leaving her in critical condition. When a SWAT team attempted to breach the door, Aguirre fired again, striking a SWAT officer in the abdomen. The officer underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. After negotiations, Aguirre released his hostages and surrendered to police without further shots being fired. Mayor Brandon Johnson praised the police department for their swift work in de-escalating the situation. Aguirre is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing on Wednesday.
