Juan Jairo Coronilla Duran was killed by a tractor-trailer after fleeing from federal immigration agents in St. Augustine, Florida.
Juan Jairo Coronilla Duran, a 28-year-old Mexican national, died on Tuesday after being struck by a tractor-trailer while fleeing from federal agents. The incident occurred around 6:40 a.m. on State Road 16 in St. Augustine, where the illegal immigrant attempted to cross the highway during an encounter with Homeland Security Investigations and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that the man died at the scene. His wife, Yésica Alamilla López, noted that Coronilla Duran had arrived in the United States only three weeks prior on a tourist visa. While bystanders, including veterinary nurse Sara Clark Atkinson, attempted to provide aid and perform CPR, the man succumbed to his injuries. The death follows a series of recent fatalities involving ICE agents. Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon described the crash as a tragedy caused by an "out-of-control agency." The administration announced that Homeland Security is conducting an investigation into the operation that resulted in the death of the Mexican national.
