Mark Warner plans to vote against Jay Clayton for director of national intelligence following disappointing confirmation hearing performance.

Democratic Senator Mark Warner announced Sunday that he will vote against Jay Clayton for the position of director of national intelligence. Although Warner previously expressed optimism regarding the nomination, he stated he was bitterly disappointed by Clayton's performance during the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing. Warner noted that Clayton struggled to provide a direct answer regarding who won the 2020 presidential election, instead stating that former President Joe Biden was "certified" as the winner. While Warner expects Clayton to be confirmed due to the Republican majority in the Senate, he expressed a preference for the version of Clayton he worked with at the SEC. The senator also criticized the current acting director, Bill Pulte, describing the situation as a "rock-in-a-hard-place" due to Pulte's lack of intelligence experience and his perceived loyalty to the administration. Despite the Democratic opposition, the nomination is expected to advance to the Senate floor for a final vote.
