Regina Romero condemns mass shooting in downtown Tucson that left nine people wounded and one suspect hospitalized.
Regina Romero, the Mayor of Tucson, condemned a "senseless act of gun violence" after a gunman opened fire in a crowded downtown entertainment district early Sunday morning. The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. in the 100 block of East Congress Street, where a suspect struck nine adults, primarily in their arms and legs. Tucson Police Department officers on foot patrol heard the gunfire and encountered the suspect running from the scene. After the gunman ignored repeated commands to stop, an officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition, while all nine victims were stabilized and hospitalized. Romero attributed the incident to Arizona’s weak gun safety laws and easy access to firearms. She urged lawmakers to take action by funding violence prevention and requiring universal background checks. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while the Tucson Police Department will conduct an internal probe to ensure policy compliance.
