Maura Healey has unveiled new design renderings for the replacement of the 91-year-old Sagamore Bridge, a project intended to improve safety and traffic flow for millions of drivers. The $2.1 billion project will feature a "twin bridge" structure that is both wider and longer than the current span, featuring 12-foot travel lanes and an expanded shoulder to accommodate broken-down vehicles. The new design includes a 14-foot wide, barrier-protected pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, along with a scenic overlook and enhanced lighting. According to the administration, the new bridge will feature a shallower 4.5-percent incline and land-based piers to better accommodate marine traffic. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2027, with the southbound span projected to open to traffic in the fall of 2033. The project is considered one of the largest transportation infrastructure investments in Massachusetts, aiming to strengthen the Cape’s economy and provide a modern, safer crossing for residents and visitors.
